An Online MBA Opens Up Many New Opportunities
You might already have a good-paying job and cannot see the need to go back to school to get your Master’s of Business Administration (MBA). However you should consider that in the face of today’s unstable economy, you have no idea when you will be seeking a new job because of layoffs. An online MBA might not be important in your current job but when you have to compete with others for another position, employers are going to consider your education when choosing among candidates. Here are some points you might consider when choosing your online MBA program:
The length of time required: The different online MBA programs are going to vary in the length of time it takes to get a degree in one of their programs. You want to go for the shortest without sacrificing the quality of the education. Some programs might take 10 months while others might take up to 2 years to complete. Be careful that if a program is too short that it is not too intense meaning that you attend class for many hours each week leaving little time for studies or homework.
The time virtual classroom sessions are scheduled: Probably the most important reason you are enrolled in an online MBA program as opposed to a traditional one is because with the online option you have more flexibility in times. Just make sure that if there are virtual class sessions that you will be able to log in with the others.
Customization features of the online MBA program: Some online MBA programs will allow you to customize the courses you take to best fit your career path. This is great when there is an area you want to get greater expertise or specialize in. Customization also allows you to not waste time on courses that you really don’t have a need for.
Will your online MBA program result in better pay? It all depends on your employer. More than likely, the day you graduate from your online MBA program you will go back to your job and continue working at the same pay. When your annual review comes up, your employer is usually limited by how much employee raises can be. So you might think your online MBA is irrelevant but where you will really see its value is when you change jobs. With many of the major employers in the U.S. downsizing and outsourcing, there will be increased competition for the few openings there are. You peers competing for the same job you are might be just as qualified as you yet do not have an MBA. When the prospective employer has to make a choice between the two of you, there is a better chance that you will get the job because you have an online MBA. This is also more than likely the point where you will see better pay (because you changed jobs).
