However, the Internet’s effects on society has been recognized. A new academic field has emerged in order to study these effects, called the field of Internet Studies. As the name suggests, the field focuses on the effects of the Internet and how it has become part of our lifestyle.

Internet studies are available in several institutes of higher learning in the United States and Australia. The course outline includes topics such as web producing, media business and internet communications. Students are taught the basics of website construction and maintenance, which entails fundamental programming, such as Java and CSS. Internet security is also discussed, so that students can learn more about the negative aspects of the internet such as viruses, malware, adware. Students will also be exposed to the legal aspects of the Internet, namely digital rights and the Internet policies, regulations and governance. Famous cases that involve these aforementioned topics are the Kazaa and Napster dilemma.

A plethora of jobs are available if you are educated in Internet studies. Most companies have taken the online route and are doing most business on the Internet; this is called e-commerce, short for electronic commerce. Jobs in internet studies can range from online media specialists, marketing executive or even a professor in sociology, among others. Television studios have started to show the shows online, advertisements are in abundance in cyberspace and even surveys are done online.
